DALLAS, Sept. 15, 1998 - Intermec Technologies Corporation, a UNOVA, Inc., (NYSE:UNA) company, announced today that its Amtech Systems Division has formed a new radio frequency identification (RFID) strategic business unit to develop complete end-to-end data collection solutions based on emerging RFID technologies.
The new strategic business unit will be based in Dallas, Texas, headed by Winston V. Guillory, vice president, who will direct more than 35 professionals in all aspects of technology development and marketing strategies. He previously served as vice president of sales, marketing, and field operations for the Amtech Systems Division. His background includes sales and marketing positions with several companies, including IBM Corporation.
"Intermec's global experience in enterprise-wide data collection systems has taught us that no single technology delivers the best solution to all customers needs. This is especially true for emerging technologies such as RFID. To be successful in the marketplace, suppliers must be committed to multiple frequencies and platforms," said Mike Ohanian, president, Intermec Technologies Corporation. "Our historic commitment to open standards will ensure that Intermec's RFID solutions will offer a better solution for customers than any single frequency or platform.

UNOVA completed in June 1998 its acquisition of Amtech Transportation Systems Group, a leading supplier of RFID technology for applications such as electronic toll and traffic management, rail and motor fleet tracking and monitoring, and access control for parking and other applications. Last year Amtech has sales of $52.7 million.
"Amtech's proven history and experience with RFID solutions for the transportation industry gives Intermec a strong lead in emerging RFID markets such as supply chain logistics, military, parcel and corporate asset control," said Guillory. "We're already working on RFID solutions that work seamlessly with Intermec's extensive data collection systems capabilities."
UNOVA, Intermec's parent company, acquired RFID semiconductor technology from IBM Corporation in December 1997. This technology offers complete read/write memory capabilities on a reusable RFID tag or label, providing superior performance characteristics compared to low-cost "inductive" or magnetic tags.
