Amtech Wins $2 Million Maintenance Contract for Automatic Coin Machines for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority
DALLAS - July 25, 1997 - The Transportation Systems Group of Amtech Corporation (NASDAQ: AMTC) today announced that it has been awarded a $2 million contract to maintain automatic coin machines on the Oklahoma turnpike. Amtech previously installed an electronic toll collection (ETC) system for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA), which includes a computer network to manage the manual collection terminals and automatic coin machines.
The 3-year and 3-month contract covers the maintenance of 91 coin machines in Oklahoma. The service begins on September 19, 1997. Amtech introduced the world's first open-road ETC highway system in 1991 in Oklahoma for the OTA. The OTA PIKEPASS system is the world's largest open-road ETC system with more than 300,000 tags and 278 lanes covering a 560-mile highway network.
Amtech ETC equipment is used by more than 30 toll authorities, with more than 2,000 lanes in 10 countries. More than 5 million Amtech tags have been sold worldwide for intelligent transportation applications, of which more than 2 million tags are used for electronic toll and traffic management alone.
"We are pleased to expand our relationship with Amtech to provide maintenance for the automatic coin machines, " said Neal McCaleb, director for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. "Amtech has proven itself as a quality service organization and we look forward to working with a single vendor for our ETC system and coin machines to ensure our overall operations run smoothly."
In 1996, Amtech was awarded $5.6 million to install and maintain the ETC system for the Harris County toll road facilities in Houston, which includes maintaining automatic coin machines.
"Amtech is a full-service company providing turnkey solutions and this contract with the OTA confirms our full-service commitment to provide a complete spectrum of toll collection services to the toll market," said Rand Brown, vice president of worldwide toll for Amtech Transportation Systems Group. "We look forward to continuing our good relationship with the OTA."
The new contract doubles Amtech's field service organization in Oklahoma, adding five on-site service technicians for customer support. In 1992, Amtech established the Amtech Response Center (ARC) in Dallas to act as a focal point for customer support services worldwide. The ARC staff technicians monitor ETC systems on line and analyze system reports to detect problems and dispatch technicians in a timely manner. The ARC helps to increase the performance of ETC systems by reducing downtime.
