David J. Sward
Dave Sward serves as TransCore’s satellite communications GlobalWave general manager, senior vice president wireless products. Dave assumed the leadership of the company’s satellite communications business after TransCore acquired the intellectual assets of Vistar Telecommunications in March 2004. Under Dave’s leadership, TransCore’s GlobalWave unit has excelled with three ground control stations providing service to five continents. The GlobalWave network supports customers worldwide including more than 660 commercial fleets throughout North America, the U.S. Department of Defense, and powers TransCore’s 3sixty fleet management services.
In October 2007, GlobalWave was selected by the European Space Agency to lead their research and development team to design a satellite-based container tracking prototype to provide global visibility of intermodal cargo containers. In 2005, following a multimillion dollar research and development (R&D) effort, GlobalWave introduced smaller, faster, more power efficient, satellite-based asset tracking technology. At the heart of these innovations was a new core modem that reduces the size of the terminals and extends battery life from the usual three years up to six years, doubling battery life of trailer tracking products on the market.
Dave has more than 27 years experience in wireless communications working for Bell Canada, Telesat Canada, Stratos Mobile Networks and Vistar Telecommunications. He earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Carleton University in 1978. Dave has served on the board of directors for the Canadian Center for Marine Communications and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.
